Hi! So I am currently taking an online blogging/reporting class at Parsons and this post/class assignment is related to that.

A story that was a huge deal was Kylie Jenner sporting a ‘yaki’ styled ponytail at New York Fashion Week. This caused an uproar, and had Twitter and the internet buzzing. Many are claiming cultural appropriation. This to me is understandable as the Kardashians and Jenners have been doing this for years.
White publications aren’t aware of what goes on in the Black and Latin communities so whenever a famous White actress/model/singer/socialite decides to wear an ‘urban’ hairstyle or rock an urban trend like timbs the publication states that they are starting a whole new trend when in reality we have been doing this for years.
This to me is no different. When reading the article I felt like the journalist was making the whole thing out to be a joke. You could already tell what side she was on, and her true opinion shined through her post. I believe that you should always remain neutral when reporting a story if it is not an opinion piece.
I would have done this differently by deciding if I wanted to speak in first person and give my opinion on the matter, or report the actual news and commentary without seeming bias. This does not work for me because I, as a Black person, agree with the claim that Kylie is cultural appropriating and I find that the writer made it seem like the entire claim is absurd.
The post is not unique and it doesn’t hold to conventional journalistic standards. Also, instead of writing quotes, the writer did a buzzfeed-style post with posting tweets. Modernized touch.
