Motown The Musical
My review of the Xensational experience! On July 30th I was given the wonderful opportunity of reviewing Motown The Musical on Broadway. I was given this opportunity a few months ago but due to my schedule I had to keep delaying it but the 30th was my day!! Let me start off by saying that I have ALWAYS said that I was supposed to be born during the Motown era. I have such great appreciation for their music because of my mother and grandmother.
My grandma told me all of the stories about how back in the day she saw Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, James Brown, etc. Whenever speaking about her Motown memories she smiles so big. I love the fact that the ladies were always dressed up, sometimes with nowhere to go. I would’ve fit in just fine!
Though I can’t change history to make it that I was born in the Motown era, I was so happy to be able to live in this era for 2 hours and 45 minutes. My mom and I were SO excited to see this show. It was a matinee and the theater was full!
Although I was a little confused with some of the choices at first because I didn’t think they looked exactly like who they were supposed to be playing. A few moments in, they truly captured the essence of who they were playing. That previous thought that I had went out the window very quickly. You can tell that these actors studied who they were playing.
I have to say, Krystal Joy Brown as Miss Diana Ross was AMAZING!!! OMG, SHE WAS FANTASTIC. Krystal looks exactly like Diana. Every outfit change and hair do captured Diana more and more as the show went on. I’ve seen several of Diana’s movies and her interviews, just to see that Krystal captured Diana’s smile and mannerisms was amazing. She literally transformed before our very eyes. Bravo, you are amazing!
The costumes were great as well as the sets. Diana’s costumes were just amazing.
Also, Charl Brown who plays Smokey Robinson was fantastic. Was that Smokey or Charl on the stage? I don’t think I need to say any more.
Little Michael was great as well! The ENTIRE cast is very talented.
If you didn’t wish that you were born in another time before this play you definitely wished so afterward. You need to go online and see this wonderful show for yourself. I cannot stress it enough! Berry Gordy is a mastermind.
There was a point in the play when Diana called people on stage to sing with her. The audience was so engaged. At one point we were instructed to hold hands during Reach Out and we held hands with no hesitation! We all sang as well! There was a lady that sang the words wrong but we still clapped for her (lol) then there was a school teacher that went up and sang as well. His class was at the show and they cheered him on!
As an audience we laughed, we clapped, we sang, we danced, we cried, and we rejoiced in all that was Motown the Musical. 2 hours and 45 minutes was way too short for this greatness, I would love to go see it again. Go see this show with your mom, your dad, your grandparents, your friend…. your next door neighbor!!! Go see this show, you will not regret it.
